EDCA Congress (now National Championship) Rules

 

 

1.       Sub-Committee

 

1.1.    A sub-committee shall be formed to organise the Open Congress. From the sub-committee, an organiser shall be elected to oversee the smooth running of the Congress with help from the sub-committee.

 

2.     The Congress shall be held over a weekend in late October to early November, or at any weekend which Executive Committee may deem suitable.

 

3.        The Congress shall consist of;

 

3.1.    A Premier section.

3.2.    A Major section & if the Executive Committee deem it necessary;

3.3.    A Minor section

 

4.   The venue for the Congress shall be held on a rota basis between; Yorkshire, South and the Midlands.

 

5.   Structure and playing conditions of the Premier section

 

5.1.    The Premier section shall contain no more than 20 players.

 

5.2.    The Premier section shall consist of 5 rounds whereby the first 3 rounds shall be played on the Saturday and the final 2 rounds shall be played on the Sunday.

 

5.3.    Each game shall be started by the Tournament Controller by pressing Black’s clock.

 

5.4.    Each player shall have 35 moves to play in 75 minutes in all rounds.

 

5.5.    Once, in a game, Black plays his 35th move, the clocks shall be stopped and be turned back 15 minutes by the Tournament Controller. All moves then must be played before the time limit is reached.

 

5.6.    The player with the most points throughout the 5 rounds shall be declared “The EDCA Premier Champion” and shall be awarded the first prize.

 

5.7.    If two or more players end up with the same number of points , the following tie-break system will be used in order;

 

5.7.1.           Sonneborn-Berger

5.7.2.           Best result against all players having more than 4 points.

5.7.3.           Drawing by lots.

 

5.8.    The top English player with the most number of points throughout the 5 rounds shall be awarded the Cedric White trophy.

 

5.9.    Clause 5.7. shall apply in clause 5.8.

 

5.10.  All other remaining prizes shall be at the discretion of the sub-committee.

 

 

6.   Structure and playing conditions of the Major section

 

6.1      The Major section shall contain no more than 30 players.

 

6.2.    The Major section shall consist of 5 rounds whereby the first 3 rounds shall be

          played on the Saturday and the final 2 rounds shall be played on the Sunday.

 

6.3.   Each game shall be started by the Tournament Controller pressing Black’s clock.

 

6.4.   Each player shall have 35 moves to play in 75 minutes in all rounds.

6.9.    Clause 5.7. shall apply in clause 5.8.

 

6.10.  All other remaining prizes shall be at the discretion of the sub-committee.

7.1       The Minor section shall contain an unlimited number of players.

 

7.2.     The Minor section shall consist of 5 rounds whereby the first 3 rounds shall be

           played on the Saturday and the final 2 rounds shall be played on the Sunday.

 

7.3.   Each game shall be started by the Tournament Controller pressing Black’s clock.

 

7.4.     Each player shall have 35 moves to play in 75 minutes in all rounds.

7.9.      Clause 5.7. shall apply in clause 5.8.

 

7.10.  All other remaining prizes shall be at the discretion of the sub-committee.

 

 

8.       Laws of Chess

 

8.1. The Laws of Chess shall apply to every game in the Congress.

 

8.2. The Controller’s decision is final in every respect.
